What are fillers?

Dermal fillers are gel-like substances that your Island Dermatology provider injects beneath your skin to restore lost volume and minimize the appearance of wrinkles. Unlike cosmetic surgery, dermal fillers require no incisions and deliver temporary results, so they aren’t a lifetime commitment. Fillers work by restoring the volume in your skin with substances similar to the collagen and fat that your body already produces. They provide instant results in a matter of minutes.

How are fillers different from Botox®?

Botox and fillers are often grouped together because they’re both nonsurgical injectables that reduce wrinkles. However, they actually work very differently to minimize fine lines and wrinkles.  Botox is a neuromodulator that works by temporarily paralyzing the muscle it’s injected into, which relaxes the skin on top of it. This is why dermatologists typically recommend Botox to treat dynamic wrinkles — lines formed by repeated muscle movement.  On the other hand, dermal fillers restore lost volume. They treat static wrinkles, which develop from gradual fat and collagen loss. 

What are the benefits of fillers?

What sets fillers apart from other wrinkle-reducing treatments is that they provide instant results. Your skin looks smoother and plumper immediately after injection. The results are also temporary, so you can return to Island Dermatology for touch-up treatments or let the fillers gradually subside on their own. Are there different types of fillers?

Island Dermatology offers four different types of fillers at their offices:

Restylane®

Restylane uses hyaluronic acid, a gel-like substance your body already produces, to fill in creases and wrinkles. It’s a treatment best suited for the lower half of your face. Once injected, Restylane produces instant results that can last six to eight months in most cases.

Perlane®

Also called Restylane Lift, Perlane is a form of Restylane that contains a combination of hyaluronic acid and lidocaine. It’s thicker than Restylane, so it works well on deep wrinkles and folds. Results from Perlane typically last six to nine months.

Juvederm® Voluma™

Juvederm Voluma is another hyaluronic acid-based filler. It’s the only filler on the market approved to contour and enhance the midface. Juvederm Voluma is also a long-lasting filler. Your results can last as long as two years.

Kybella®
